How did Del Dayo grow up?
Before it held homes, Del Dayo held horses. The Carmichael Chamber of Commerce's history page says James Ben Ali Haggin and his associates bred and raised racehorses on a farm where Del Dayo Estates now stands.
Haggin and his brother-in-law Lloyd Tevis took ownership of Rancho del Paso in 1859, according to the history published by Haggin Oaks. Haggin turned the ranch into a thoroughbred breeding center that held more than 600 horses at its peak. His horse Ben Ali won the 1886 Kentucky Derby.
Haggin stopped breeding thoroughbreds in 1905 and sold Rancho del Paso acreage for subdivision, with the last deed transfer completed in 1910. Daniel Carmichael bought about 1,000 acres of Rancho del Paso land for his Colony No. 2, so the racing ground and the Carmichael colonies share a land history.
