Quarry District, Rocklin: Downtown Neighborhood Guide

This is Rocklin's historic downtown around Quarry Park, Pacific Street and Rocklin Road, where the old granite town is adding new homes.

What is the Quarry District?

The Quarry District is Rocklin's historic downtown: the blocks around Quarry Park, Pacific Street, Rocklin Road and Front Street, beside the railroad. The city designated Quarry Park as its official downtown about ten years ago, and Johnson-Springview Park marks the district's northern edge.

It is the one part of Rocklin where you can still see the granite town that came before the subdivisions. Old quarry pits, now ponds, sit a few blocks from new apartments and a planned public market.

How did the Quarry District grow up?

Granite built it. The City of Rocklin's historic sites tour, made with the Rocklin Historical Society, points to stops that tell the story street by street. The lake at Rocklin Road and Granite Drive fills an early 1900s quarry run by Finnish immigrant Matt Ruhkala. At 3980 Rocklin Road, Adolf Pernu built a company store for his California Granite Company workers in 1912, and the date is still carved over the entrance.

Finnish quarry workers left their mark too. Finn Hall, the Finnish Temperance Hall, stands at Rocklin Road and South Grove Street. The railroad depot at Rocklin Road and Railroad Avenue was reconstructed in 2006 on a line that dates to the 1860s.

What is there to see in the Quarry District?

Peter Hill Heritage Park, on both sides of Rocklin Road near Front Street, holds a train roundhouse replica, the reconstructed Old Firehouse, Old St. Mary's Church and a public fruit orchard. The Rocklin History Museum is in the Fletcher House at 3895 Rocklin Road, and admission is free.

Quarry Park Adventures at 5373 Pacific Street uses the walls and rim of the old Big Gun Quarry for climbing and ropes courses. Cante Ao Vinho pours wine in the Historic Quarry House at 5250 Front Street, per the 2026 Placer County Wine Trail map.

What kind of homes are in the Quarry District?

The oldest homes in Rocklin are here, on the older street grid near the railroad. The city's historic sites list includes a set of Victorian homes, and you will also find early 1900s cottages, mid-century houses and newer infill, sometimes on the same block. The city applies its Quarry architectural guidelines to new building here, so new homes are meant to fit the older look.

New housing is adding more choices. The city reports these projects in or next to the district:

  • Quarry Row: 74 single-family homes approved on 7.4 acres near Pacific and Grove streets.
  • Quarry Place: at the former Kmart site on Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Street, St. Anton Communities plans 180 income-restricted apartments and about 40 single-family homes.
  • Pacific Street Apartments: affordable housing on land the city bought in 2019, with construction set to begin January 2026 and finish around fall 2027.
  • Rocklin Public Market: planned for the roughly 3-acre former Big Gun Quarry site at 5255 Pacific Street, with 20 homes above ground-floor shops in a three-story building.

Older homes may need updates to wiring, plumbing and foundations. Get thorough inspections, and ask about past additions and their permits.

How do you get around the Quarry District?

This is the most connected part of Rocklin. The Amtrak Capitol Corridor stop is downtown, Interstate 80 runs along the district's edge, and Pacific Street carries traffic north toward Sunset Boulevard. Many errands are a short walk or bike ride.

Which school district serves the Quarry District?

The Quarry District is served by Rocklin Unified School District. Confirm the assigned school with the district directly.

What draws buyers to the Quarry District?

The Quarry District offers character and convenience. An older home on a walkable street, near the train and the freeway, is rare in South Placer. Buyers who want history and no homeowners association often start here.

The new projects are a draw for some and a question for others. More homes and a public market bring more activity downtown, so ask what is planned near any house before you buy.

What should sellers in the Quarry District know?

Pricing an older Quarry District home takes care, because few sales are truly alike. Lot size, the age of the systems and the quality of past remodels move the price more than square footage. New construction nearby will also compete for buyers, so a clean, well-prepared older home has to show what a new one cannot.
